The Pursuit of Liberty and Identity
This website is the culmination of the skills that I have developed in Advanced Placement Literature and Composition; these skills include but are not limited to textual analysis, film analysis, and blogging. I have chosen to exhibit these skills through the analysis of two thematically similar pieces that come from different time periods. I will blog and conduct my textual analysis on The Devil's Advocate, a novel written by Taylor Caldwell in 1955. The focus of my film analysis will be James McTeigue's V for Vendetta which was released in 2006.
The Devil's Advocate portrays a futuristic, dystopian America. The abasement of American society has two root causes in this piece. The first being the willingness of American citizens to bequeath their responsibilities to their government in return for perverted security and regulated uniformity. The second, and possibly more important, is the American citizens betrayal of themselves; American citizens have lost their sense of personal dignity, they lost their protection from subjugation. Andrew Durant, the freedom fighting protagonist, aims to restore America to its days of liberty and revitalize its citizens. He will stop at nothing to do this, even if he has to be someone that he is not, a devil's advocate. To learn more about this revolution, click here.
The film V for Vendetta is strikingly similar to Caldwell's work which was written decades earlier, even decades earlier than the book from which the film was adapted. Like the aforementioned novel, this film focuses on the erosion of a nation's (England) society via its populace's own doing. Another parallel between this film and Caldwell's work is that the citizens of either nation are not aware of their oppression, until someone makes it clear. Upon the citizens' revelation, revolution ensues. However, my analysis of this piece will not be conducted on its thematic elements; instead, it will be grounded in the film's cinematic elements, or the components that are exclusive to film. These elements include, but are not limited to lighting, camera angle, framing, sound, and editing.
My blog will highlight the sections of the The Devil's Advocate that I find to be both intriguing and pertinent to my life. I will be blogging on a weekly basis and revisiting past blog posts to update their information or to revise their content. For me, this is essential because I want my blog posts to be structurally sound and reflective of my most current opinions.
